important to know where your employees stand. Ask
employees what sustainability means to them. Do they
care about the company’s effect on the environment?
And is working for a company dedicated to social and
environmental responsibility important to them?
MillerCoors measures employee opinions annually to
gauge views on such things as sustainability goals.
“We’ve noticed that engaging our employees in the
development of our programs and goals not only
makes a difference in their attitude and commitment,
it ultimately dictates our progress,” said Marotta.
Secondly, MillerCoors invites employees to be sus-
tainability ambassadors. The company has developed
a Sustainability Leadership Council comprised of 35
volunteers from all areas of its business who meet
quarterly to discuss strategy and the ways to enlist
partners, sponsors and stakeholders.
“The Council has been invaluable in elevating and
strengthening the areas that our most important to
our business: water stewardship, packaging, employee
culture, brewery operations, and integrating sustain-
ability into the commercial organization,” she said.
Third, MillerCoors encourages employees to be
global, but to act local. Employees can see firsthand
how sustainability measures impact their local com-
munities. If every community focuses on improving
its environmental footprint, the benefits spread far
outside the initial geographic area.
The fourth area that MillerCoors focuses on is to en-
sure its sustainability efforts are communicated across
all their brands. The company created a new position,
Sustainability Marketing Brand Manager, who works
across all the company’s brands, integrating the sus-
tainability initiatives into all its brand personas.
Lastly, the company urges employees to share their
stories. This year, the company launched blog titled
Behind The Beer, that features contributors across its
businesses. The blog provides an opportunity for em-
ployees to share their stories and accomplishments,
and allows customers to fully appreciate how impor-
tant sustainability is to the company. The company
also launched a Twitter Tribe, comprised of employ-
ees acting as ambassadors for their products and sus-
tainability efforts. In addition, the company’s Coors
Recycled Facebook posts have reached 1.66 millions
users and generated 61,000 engagements from Feb-
ruary to March alone.
The greatest strength most companies have at their
disposal is their employees, a vital resource that is
sadly often mis-used. But MillerCoors has discovered
that actively engaging its employees to be a part of
the larger corporate culture leads to innovation and
success in meeting sustainable goals.
