But the ways in which those losses occur are
demonstrably different. In developing countries, 40
percent of losses occur at post-harvest and process-
ing levels, while in industrialized countries more
than 40 percent of losses happen at retail and con-
sumer levels. The FAO reports that at the retail level,
large quantities of food are wasted due to quality
standards that over-emphasize appearance, a clear ex-
ample of when a package’s functionality should be
more important than the way it looks.
The FAO reports that food loss and waste also
amount to a major squandering of resources, includ-
ing water, land, energy, labor and capital, as well as
needlessly producing greenhouse gas emissions, con-
tributing to global warming and climate change.
To put the amount of food lost in stark relief, the
FAO reports that the food currently lost or wasted in
Latin America could feed 300 million while the total
amount wasted in Europe could feed 200 million.
These numbers shine a dramatic spotlight on the ex-
treme importance of this problem.
The FAO says in the report that even if only one-
fourth of the food currently lost of wasted globally
was saved, it would be enough to feed 870 million
hungry people in the world.
As a crucial part of the supply chain, the packaging
sector has the potential to do great good in this area.
True, life-changing work. In developing countries the
losses typically take place early in the supply chain, but
in developing countries food is wasted primarily later
in the chain, when packaging plays a more crucial role.
The UN has launched a global campaign called
Think. Eat. Save. Reduce Your Footprint” in the
hopes of bringing the problem more into the con-
sciousness of retailers and consumers. To help spread
the word about the program, the UN has teamed
with trade show organizer Messe Dusseldorf (the
company behind the massive drupa show).
The campaign harnesses the expertise of organiza-
tions such as WRAP (Waste and Resources Action
Programme), Feeding the 5,000 and other partners,
including national governments.
In a world of seven billion people, set to grow to
nine billion by 2050, wasting food makes no sense,
economically, environmentally and ethically,” said UN
Under-Secretary-General and UNEP Executive Direc-
tor Achim Steiner.
There are many things converters, retailers, CPGs
and consumers can do to help ameliorate this terrible
problem, not least of which is to realize that before
every upscale design element is instituted, a package’s
main function must never be compromised — that of
protecting and safeguarding the contents within.
