convenience”,“lower costs”, and “safety and traceabil-
ity” as three areas that have increased demand for ac-
tive and intelligent packaging.
Nearly 60 percent of the respondents said that re-
search and development was the core area to gener-
ate demand for new technology in packaging
production, and added that printing is considered the
most important production areas. And while they
mentioned digital printing as possibly showing an in-
creased importance, they felt strongly that f lexo
would be the key printing driver.
As far as the types of packaging the industry execu-
tives felt would benefit most from new technology
they felt it was in the ability to deliver “attractive
packaging” and “inexpensive packaging.”
Both buyers and suppliers foresee stumbling blocks
in the future in introducing some of these high-tech
choices, primarily due to the high cost of raw materi-
als and the overall complexity of trying to recognize
the right technology to use for the right packaging
application.Truth is, trial and error will have to enter
the equation at some point, which many companies
will have to include as part of their R&D budget.
Nearly 60 percent of respondents expect there to
be growth in the area of RFID smart labels, a technol-
ogy that has been around for a number of years but
for which many additional applications still exist.
The top three tech-based packaging approaches
that respondents felt would increase in the future are
tamper-evident packaging”, “retail-ready packaging”
and “PET plastic packaging.”
In addition, respondents see “bio-degradable packag-
ing”, “recycled plastic packaging” and “plant and veg-
etable waste-based packaging” as all requiring an
increase in new technology developments in 2013. As
far as active and intelligent packaging is concerned, re-
spondents feel that consumer convenience, safety and
traceability and enhanced product performance will all
be major factors in increased demand.
AMERIPEN Urges Industry
To Tackle Sustainability
In a new new brochure, The American Institute for
Packaging and the Environment (AMERIPEN) urges
the packaging industry to think more broadly about
developing strategies to reduce waste. AMERIPEN
promotes a comprehensive approach that considers
the combined economic, environmental and social
impacts of both packages and the products they con-
tain. The brochure, called “Enhancing the Sustainabili-
ty of Products and Packaging,” can be downloaded
