AF&PA Honors
Sustainable Companies

E
arly last month, at the annual meeting of The American For-
est & Paper Association (AF&PA) held in Scottsdale, Ari-
zona, the first-ever Better Practices, Better Plant 2020
Sustainability Awards were presented.
The awards dovetail from the association’s “Better Practices,
Better Planet” initiative, which is subtitled “Continuing AF&PA’s
Commitment to Sustainability.”
The association set out to establish a set of quantifiable sus-
tainability goals and the means in which to measure them as
transparently as possible.
Within the framework of Better Practices, Better Planet 2020,

Environment Awards
At the recent TLMI Annual Meeting
held in Naples, Florida, Mitsubishi
Polyester Film, Greer, South Carolina,
and The Label Printers, Aurora, Illi-
nois, each received TLMI Environ-
mental Leader ship Awards. This
award recognizes TLMI member
companies that have consistently
demonstrated a commitment to pro-
gressive environmental practices
across a range of areas including
solid waste reduction, recycling,
waste or energy recovery, the imple-
mentation of new ‘clean’ technology
and/or processes, and the implemen-
tation of an education program.
The Converter Award for Environ-
mental Leadership was given to The
Label Printers, a company that has cre-
ated an environmental culture
throughout their entire organization,
reducing waste and energy consump-
tion. The Label Printers created an
audit team that identified 17 cate-
gories of waste that could be eliminat-
ed from its waste stream and
developed a partnership with a manu-
facturer of engineered fuels allowing
